Taking Kaletra
KALETRA is always used in combination with other anti-HIV medicines to treat people with HIV infection. KALETRA offers you dosing options that fit your life. It is available in tablet or liquid form, giving you and your doctor a choice of how to take it. KALETRA tablets are supplied in a bottle of 120 pills. KALETRA is also available in an oral solution (liquid) that comes in 2 bottles (160 mL each) for a 30-day supply. The liquid contains large amounts of alcohol.
The usual dose of KALETRA for adults is 2 tablets (400/100 mg) with or without food or 5 mL of the liquid with food twice a day in combination with other anti-HIV medicines. If you are new to HIV therapy, meaning you have not taken HIV medications in the past, your doctor may prescribe KALETRA once a day. This dosing option consists of 4 tablets with or without food or 10 mL of liquid with food (800/200 mg) once daily in combination with other anti-HIV medicines.
Important Dosing Information
- KALETRA tablets should be swallowed whole and not chewed, broken, or crushed.
- Once-daily dosing of KALETRA in combination with other anti-HIV medicines is not recommended for people with previous HIV treatment experience and has not been evaluated in children (6 months to 12 years of age).
- KALETRA liquid contains large amounts of alcohol.
- KALETRA therapy with Sustiva, Viramune, Agenerase, or Viracept:
- Your doctor may increase your dose of KALETRA if you are also taking Sustiva, Viramune, Agenerase, or Viracept
- KALETRA should not be taken once daily with these medicines
- Storing KALETRA
- KALETRA tablets should be stored at room temperature. Exposure of KALETRA tablets to high humidity outside the original container for longer than 2 weeks is not recommended.
- Refrigerated KALETRA oral solution remains stable until the expiration date printed on the label. If stored at room temperature up to 77°F (25°C), KALETRA oral solution should be used within 2 months. Avoid exposure to excessive heat.
Before you take KALETRA, you must tell your doctor about all the medicines you are taking or planning to take. These include other prescription and non-prescription medicines and herbal supplements. Be sure to strictly follow your doctor’s recommendation on how often you should take KALETRA Tablets.
