Talking to Your Doctor

It is important to take an active role in your HIV therapy. Open communication between you and your doctor is a good way to make sure you are receiving the treatment that is right for you and your lifestyle. Talk to your doctor or other healthcare provider if you have any questions about your medicine or condition.

The information your doctor discusses with you can be complicated, so it is a good idea to take notes or bring along a friend or family member to help you keep track. Also, bring a list of all the pills you are taking, including over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and natural health products (including herbal products). You should also inform your doctor of any medical problems you have had in the past and any you have now.

Throughout the course of HIV treatment, you will have frequent blood tests to check how you are responding to your treatment. Be sure that you understand the test results, and if you don't, ask your doctor to explain what they mean for your current and future health.

Understanding the goals of your treatment will make you more likely to follow instructions and stay on your medication. This is especially important in the treatment of HIV, where staying on your medication is vital.
